Second line parades have a rich and vibrant history in New Orleans. Initially, these parades were a way for families to commemorate their loved ones, with the bereaved family and band members forming the “first line” while the larger group of supporters joined as the “second line.” Today, second line parades have evolved into a lively cultural celebration to mark a variety of joyous occasions, including weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays.
